Indian Eye Research Group – ARVO International Chapter Affiliate
Join ARVO-INDIAARVO-India is dedicated to advancing eye and vision research across India by fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and interdisciplinary research ecosystem. We strive to bring together clinicians, basic scientists, optometrists, public health experts, and innovators to address critical challenges in ocular health through high-quality research and knowledge exchange.
Our vision is to strengthen India’s global presence in eye and vision research by nurturing scientific excellence, encouraging cross-institutional collaborations, and empowering the next generation of vision researchers. ARVO-India aspires to be a national platform that catalyzes impactful research, translates scientific discoveries into clinical practice, and contributes meaningfully to the prevention and treatment of visual impairment.
The roots of ARVO-India trace back to the early 1990s, when a group of scientists and clinicians in Hyderabad recognized the need for a collaborative forum dedicated to eye research. This initiative led to the formation of the Hyderabad Eye Research Group in 1990, bringing together researchers from leading institutions such as L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), and Osmania University.
As collaborations expanded nationwide, this regional initiative evolved into the Indian Eye Research Group (IERG) in 1995, uniting premier eye care and research institutions across India. The annual IERG meetings became a key scientific forum modeled on international vision research conferences.
In 2011, IERG was inducted as an International Chapter Affiliate of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and renamed ARVO-India. Today, ARVO-India is a nationally registered organization headquartered at the Hyderabad Eye Research Foundation, LV Prasad Eye Institute, with a membership exceeding 500 researchers across basic science, clinical research, optometry, public health, rehabilitation, and innovation.
